Independent Living or Personal Care – which is right for me?

Many seniors live alone or with their spouse in the home they purchased decades ago. As time goes by they either realize they do not want the responsibility of taking care of a home or, unfortunately, their health begins to decline.

Independent Living

For individuals or couples who cannot or do not want to continue caring for a house and yard, Independent Living accommodations in a senior community are a great choice. At The Williamsport Home Apartments, in order to qualify to reside in an Independent Living Apartment, a person must be able to ambulate with a walker and care for themselves. A chef-prepared meal at 12 noon, each day, is included in the monthly fee but residents must be able to prepare or obtain their other meals and be responsible for their own medications and personal hygiene.

Personal Care

Many seniors, due to medical issues are unable to care for themselves but do not require a skilled nursing setting. For these individuals our Personal Care programs are a good match. The services provided at The Williamsport Home Personal Care programs include assistance with managing medications, three nutritious meals each day, 24/7 certified caregivers on site, housekeeping and laundry services, and directed social, spiritual and recreational activities and outings.

Although we strive to maintain as much independence as we can, as we age, there comes a time when some assistance is required. Often times loved ones or close friends are called upon to “fill in the gaps” and provide care and support. The positive aspect of moving into a senior community is that care is always available when you need it.

If you have any questions about whether you should be considering an Independent Living or a Personal Care Program, please call The Williamsport Home at 570-323-8781. Kim Haller, our Independent Living Program Director, and Yvonne Laubach, our Personal Care Director, would be happy to arrange a tour for you or your loved one and help you make an informed decision on which program is right for you.
